Click on the link above for a short reflection on the Men’s Movement and the Women’s movement–and how we might, in partnership, enhance wholeness for all of us. I did this in partnership with Jen De-Vries (www.jendevries.com ) as part of our ‘Partners for Change’ work. We explore, with people and organisations how, rather than men being ‘champions’ for women in gender equity, we can become partners. This video is followed by a second one, (“Men Women and partnership”) that looks at the challenge for those of us in the ‘dominant culture’, in moving towards partnership.
Hi Tim
Many thanx foe this. I’m a big admirer of the work you do. Love your definition if spirit too!
Firstly I think one of the things that the second wave didn’t achieve was women’s connection to spirituality. I think in part because of biological reductionism. At that time women were already framed as being closer to nature. And because women wanted to some of the power that the external world offered they wete willing to forgo spirituality as a central focus. Perhaps at tbat time it was a Sophie choice?
Secondly and connected to the first point feminists of equality/liberal feminists wanted what men had in the external world e.g. equal pay, equal power, equal numbers on boards, banks, law, justice etc (and rightly so). Feminists of difference and diversity/radical feminists their project is slightly different. Rather than a power over or an adoption of the same it’s a power with, and a working across differences. I also think it’s a feminism that comes from a lived experience rather than an ideology.
And lastly women want to feel safe. Empowerment cannot flourish or be truly fulfilled if half the human experience are afraid of being hurt/attacked/raped/bashed/demeaned/controlled/belittled by the other in their homes, the workplace in public places or out on the streets. And yes not all men however.
Wishing you well with this project
Warmest regards
Wendy
